Hypertension:

Overview:

Hypertension, or high blood pressure, means that the pressure of the blood on the blood vessels is higher than normal. When blood pressure is poorly controlled, it increases risk of heart attack and stroke. About 32% of American adults have high blood pressure.

Symptoms:

Hypertension is known as the “silent killer” because most of the time, there are no symptoms. High blood pressure can only be diagnosed by measuring the blood pressure.

Risk factors and causes:

Several factors may increase a patient’s risk of developing high blood pressure. These factors include drinking alcohol, smoking, not getting enough physical activity, being diabetic, as well as other factors. Factors such as age, race, and family history also play a role in increasing the risk of developing hypertension.

Treatment:

Treatment for hypertension includes lifestyle changes such as maintaining a healthy body weight, smoking cessation, and limiting alcohol intake. Treatment also includes a variety of different medications to control blood pressure.
